What is Holistic Healthcare?

You may have heard recent news and talk about alternative medicine or holistic healthcare. As there is so much info available now, it can become confusing sifting through and deciphering all of it. So you may ask, what is holistic healthcare?

For many years, this field was looked at as any form of medicine that was not what has been traditionally practiced in the western world. Homeopathy means that alternative methods to these traditional ones are used. It works on the theory that “like cures like”. The holistic approach seeks to form a treatment regimen that results in a sound mind, sound body, ad sound sprit. It may include methods from traditional medicine, complimentary medicine, and alternative medicine. The whole individual is treated as opposed to parts or systems, and it is not limited to one method or doctrine.

Holistic practitioners seek to align themselves with other practitioners (no matter what field or specialty) in order to treat each individual patient in the manner that is best for them. The body is treated as a healing mechanism, and it is worked on in order to generate its natural healing properties. As it will help and sometimes eliminate chronic conditions and illnesses, a lifestyle change is also made in order to make the body go back to its natural capacity to heal itself.

Holistic care takes into account what a person does, says, and how they act and react as well. It is very personalized as it seeks to change the bad behaviors into good, thus creating positive effects on the body, mind, and soul. These all work together to create the health and well-being of the individual.

Traditional healthcare has become an increasing burden on people’s time, money, and health. Its effects on the economy have been awful. It has also been realized that many of the treatments that it uses and insists upon are actually harmful and often make the patient sicker. Typically in the past, its doctors and nurses sought to treat the illness or condition itself while disregarding the patient and his other functions and problems. This was the case even with good and helpful practitioners. That is changing.

Many traditional medical practitioners are now referring to and working with alternative and complimentary practitioners. They have opened their eyes to the possibility that maybe there is not just one answer. They wish to help in developing holistic drug rehab methods in Ontario for their patients.
