The Nature of Alcoholism

Alcohol is commonly a part in every single person’s life. Having occasional drinks with friends is nothing to be ashamed about; however, it is when these drinks turn into binge drinking or an alcoholic dependency that you must stop and take a serious look at your alcoholic consumption. Truth be told, many individuals do not notice alcoholism slowly taking over their body. If you are worried about becoming addicted to alcohol, you must acknowledge the nature of alcoholism. By doing so, you will be able to recognize certain patterns not only in your life, but your friend’s and family’s too.

If you or a loved one is going through financial strain, marriage troubles, child difficulties, or work issues, there is a higher chance that you may just begin drinking more excessively. These are just a few examples; there are many out there that you may be going through. An individual will drink alcohol to relieve their worry and stress over these issues. They will often need a treatment for alcohol abuse in Ontario.

Unfortunately, the amount of alcohol they consume will slowly increase. This is because your body gets used to the alcohol, and requires more of it to rid the brain of the worrisome nature it experiences. For example, a person may start with one glass of wine after work to forget about their troubles, but this can quite easily develop into two, three, or four glasses of wine. Slowly, your body will adjust to the alcohol and you will feel as though you cannot wait to get home and have a drink. This will slowly develop into taking over the lunch periods while at work. If you do not consume enough alcohol prior to heading into work or while on a break, you can often experience withdrawal effects such as headache, anxiety, depression, and palpitations.

This scenario is much more frequent than one thinks, and is a sure sign of alcoholism setting in on an individual’s life. In addition to losing your job, there is also a high chance of losing the respect that your peers have for you. Once out of a job, the alcoholic tendencies will begin to increase in frequency. You will use alcohol as a way to cope with the loss of your job, and it will often only worsen the situation.

As a side note, the nature of alcoholism can also progress from social situations. Hazardous drinking practices such as binge drinking usually occur when one is with friends and at special events. While one may not realize they are doing such an act, binge drinking commonly occurs when a female has drank more than four alcoholic beverages within an hour and when a male drinks more than five within an hour. If this binge drinking act happens just once a week every week, there is a much higher chance that the individual will adopt alcoholism tendencies. For example, they may feel the need to drink after a hard workday throughout the week, as it reminds them of the weekend and de-stresses.

This nature and progress of alcoholism is hard to catch at the very first signs. It is your obligation as a family member to watch for loved ones showing alcoholic tendencies. For instance, if your brother or sister go out each week to the bars and get drunk each time, chances are the alcoholic consumption will increase. While it may be easy to notice others and the signs they show, it is much more difficult to tell when you are experiencing alcoholic tendencies. It is imperative to examine your life at certain intervals. Consider how many times you drink each week and how much you consume when you do. Examine why you drink and whether or not there are any reasons that you may be avoiding.

You should also ask a loved one to look out you. Many families will not hesitate to mention something if one of them begins drinking excessively, and in most cases, this results in a lot of saved heartbreak for the drinker. Ask your friends and family to cut you off if you drink more than three alcoholic beverages within an hour or so. This will ensure you acknowledge when the alcoholic tendencies are coming out in your lifestyle, and help you to overcome them before they get worse.
