Student Binge Drinking

When students start thinking about going to college or even going into high school, they think about the social scene. Part of that social scene is drinking like there is no limit. There are many students that drink so much that in order to keep them alive, the emergency room has to pump their stomach. This is how serious this has become.

What is Binge Drinking?

There are many people out there who don’t know what binge drinking exactly is. Let’s start by answering what this is so that we are all on the same page. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the term, this is when people drink so much that they just finally pass out. They don’t stop to take a break. They just keep drinking for long periods of time. When they pass out, anything can happen including that they could quit breathing.

The Decline

Many will note that binge drinking used to be the big thing. You will also find that in the recent years, they have made it a point on college campuses and more to try to put an end to this. Many have increased security. In some cases, they have gone about to actually expel those who have been caught drinking on college campuses. They have increased room checks and have also placed curfews and things of that nature.

The Harm of Binge Drinking

Many want to know what dangers there are with students who go about binge drinking. Many things can happen to answer that question. For instance, there are many who pass out and therefore, you reduce brain cells. Some students have died due to the amount of alcohol that they take in. There are more problems with grades and failing. There is much harm from health to social consequences.

Binge Drinking and the Media

With all the television shows out now days that tell students it’s okay to binge drink, it’s no wonder that they do this. Not to mention, there are many students who watched parents who lived this life. They then find the consequences don’t add up. Many have said they think that what they show on those shows is dramatized by Hollywood, but what you find is this isn’t the case at all. In many instances, they have it right on the dot. They don’t pay much attention to the story line because the shows they watch make it where everything is going to be okay and so forth.

Stats on Binge Drinking

There are many programs that are putting an end to this. Many wish that when someone knows that the drinking age is 21 then they know that they shouldn’t be drinking, but this isn’t the case at all. Many don’t know that for many teens, this begins at age 13. The peak years as they refer to it as occur between the ages of eighteen and twenty two.

Until this is under control, officials and other people who work with people who have binged while drinking have been trying to find a way to make a difference. It’s a problem that keeps many in the emergency room when they shouldn’t be there. It does more damage than one thinks. There are no definitive answers as to what should be done. They just keep guessing as they go while some of the things they try are successful, others aren’t so much so. What they do know is that by doing research, they learn some of the ages to target as well as other demographics. Student can always attend an alcohol treatment in Ontario where they will get help. It can even be on an outpatient basis so they can keep going to school.
