Alcohol Abuse and Treatment in North Bay, Ontario

Alcoholism is a rising problem in many of the Ontario towns and cities. In fact, it is estimated that more than 40% of the population has at least two drinks a week. A recent survey also suggested that at least 20% of this number is involved in heavier drinking episodes of two to four times a week. A smaller portion yet is abusing alcohol on a daily basis.

One of the towns that is finding itself on the front lines of alcoholism is North Bay, Ontario. Located on the northern shore of Lake Nipissing, North Bay is the seat of the Nipissing District. With a population of close to 60,000, this is a growing town with the problems that go with it. While North Bay is a relatively quiet town there is still a need for quality alcohol treatment among both adults and teenagers.

North Bay, Ontario can be called a combination college town and military base. There are two local colleges that attract a little more than 7,000 students. North Bay is also home to the Royal Canadian Air Force's 22nd Wing. There is also a Canadian Force Army Reserve Unit stationed within the town. This swells the population to much more than the census states.

The alcohol problem in North Bay, Ontario is not as bad as it would be in a larger city, but the problem is still there. The amount of college students, with the influx of new people in the Canadian services leads to an increase in alcoholism. North Bay needs to realize as the city grows there is substantial need of quality alcohol treatment.

The North Bay teenage population is quickly catching up to their adult counterparts. One of the reasons is the colleges in the town. However, the lack of a quality education and preventative program is also another contributing factor.

Teenage drinking is a problem in North Bay as up to 13% of the teenage population admits to having a drink a few times a month. From these few drinks comes a more involved habit of abusing alcohol. Treatment facilities in the North Bay area, while doing their part in rehabilitation, need to continue to focus on education and prevention.

North Bay residents benefit greatly from the different treatment facilities around the area. While there is now a dedicated inpatient facility in the area, there are several in many surrounding towns. One of the problems, however, is that the waiting list to enter these areas is long. Waiting for a spot to open up can mean that the person with the alcohol addiction can fall further in their addiction.

A solution is to create new alcohol treatment facilities in the North Bay, Ontario area to take care of the residents and provide quality counseling, therapy, medical treatment, and support. It is also important for the people involved in the treatment process be willing to stay committed to it for long term success. Without this commitment, anything that is done in North Bay, or Ontario, will have a decreasing success rate.
