The substance called cocaine hydrochloride is also called crack or crack cocaine. Some drug addicts chemically transform cocaine so they can remove the hydrochloride. This transformation is known as "freebasing" and makes the cocaine more potent. "Crack cocaine" is a solid form of freebased cocaine. It is called "crack" because it snaps and cracks when heated or smoked.

Crack is a form that is prepared from freebased cocaine, as the coke users don't buy the equipment or expose themselves to the explosive chemicals used with freebasing. Crack is often packed in vials or plastic bags and sold in small quantities, usually 300 to 500 milligrams or enough for two to three inhalations.

In the ‘70s, cocaine cost a lot of money and was considered a "status" drug. The introduction of cheap crack increased the possibilities of use, which caused crack to become the substance of choice of many drug users, especially inner-city disadvantaged youth. Crack's convenience, ease of concealment, wide availability, and low cost has increased its use. One pure powder gram of coke will transform to approximately 0.89 grams of crack. The DEA estimates that crack rocks are between 75 and 90 % pure cocaine.
