Alcohol Abuse and Treatment in Markham, Ontario

Alcohol Abuse and Treatment in Markham, Ontario

Alcohol abuse is a disease that is felt all over Canada. In the province of Ontario, the most populated province, this abuse is found in close to 20% of the population. This means that many people are struggling with an addiction to alcohol and need to have help in the form of treatment and support.

Markham, Ontario is a town of close to 210,000 people. It is part of the Greater Toronto Area and is the largest town in Ontario. Markham has seen a tremendous explosion in its population since the mid '90's when many of the world's high tech companies have made their Canadian head offices in the town. Companies like IBM, Toshiba, Motorola, Lucent, Sun Microsystems, and Apple all have head offices located in Markham, Ontario.

The province of Ontario leads the country in the amount of alcohol that is sold each year. Because of the population, the influence, and the many different resorts and vacation areas, alcohol is both sold and consumed in large quantities. Affluence in the region also contributes to the rising rate of alcoholism in the province.

Markham, because of the proximity to Toronto, has some very good options to choose from when it comes to choosing treatment options. However, the current situation in the Markham area demands to be met with much more aggressiveness and preventative measure.

Teen alcoholism in Markham is reaching epidemic proportions. As the town continues to grow, there are more opportunities to not only drink with friends, but for the alcohol to be more readily accessible. This leads to a lot of social problems like teenage school dropout, runaways, and teen pregnancy. Not only are these issues, but there is also criminal acts like burglary, drunk driving, and even accidental death.

There has been a focus on education and prevention as far as teenage alcoholism is concerned. There have been some successes to tell about this incentive, but Markham must do much more in order to stem the tide of teen drinking. A combined effort from parents, friends, local authorities, teachers, and rehab professionals must take place in order for a real decrease in underage drinking to be found.

When one thinks about alcohol abuse treatment the first thing that comes to mind is that of Alcoholics Anonymous. However, while this is a great support group, it is not a starting point. Surrounded by a large population, and several large towns, there are plenty of options to choose from in Markham.

These treatment options range from simple support groups to full service inpatient alcohol treatment facilities in Marham Ontario. Depending on the severity of the abuse of alcohol, a family can find help for their loved one in whatever form they need.

Markham, Ontario is a large town that has a lot going for it. As more people continue to strengthen the alcohol treatment programs, there will be even more options for success in this Ontario town. The key is perseverance and not giving up on the needs of the person who is under the addiction of alcohol.

Alcoholism and Marriage

Alcoholism and Marriage

One of the biggest problems that is associated with alcoholism is that which is found within the family environment. Alcoholism is a disease that can quickly change the character of a person. This change in character can be in mood swings, a mean distemper, and even being abusive both physically and verbally. Because of these drastic changes, marriages dissolve and families are broken apart.

In the Canadian province of Ontario it is estimated that 43% of the population has a few drinks twice a week. Out of this number there are many who have problems with drinking much more than that on a weekly basis. These are the ones who have an addiction to alcohol and need help before serious medical conditions set in, or even death.

Besides the medical conditions that are prevalent in someone who drinks excessively is the problems that are social and personal. Marriage is a sacred institution that is the starting point for a family. When two people meet they fall in love and agree to begin a life together. Alcohol is often times the factor that brings the marriage to a less than pleasant ending.

Marriage in Ontario is under attack. The average norm for divorces in Ontario during a year can range from 25,000 to 30,000. Within this number there are many that fall apart because of alcoholism and the effects of it. There is an incredible strain that is placed upon the two people who are involved in the marriage. The late nights, the money spent on the alcohol, and the verbal abuse are only a few of the factors as to why alcoholism and marriage do not mix well.

When alcohol is a factor in a marriage there are many things that can go wrong. One of these, and perhaps the most straining, is the way that the person abusing alcohol treats their spouse, children, job, and self. It is very painful to watch as someone begins their spiral out of control with alcohol. It begins with small indications such as missed days at work and less money in the bank account. However, it quickly progresses to days of being away from home, short temper, outbursts of violence, and a loss of their job.

In order for the marriage to remain intact it is important for the spouse of the alcoholic to find an alcohol treatment program in Ontario as soon as possible. Knowing the signs of alcoholism is important so that intervention can be done and treatment started. Things like alcohol in the breath at odd hours of the day, a loss of interest in hygiene, and being tired more through the day are all initial signs of alcohol abuse.

Once the signs are found, looking into a quality rehab service in Ontario should be done quickly. If there is not a treatment service nearby, then calling one of the many hotlines in the province of Ontario, or contacting the nearest hospital will help to find quality rehab services. It is also important to realize that treatment is a long process that requires dedication on the part of all parties involved.

History of Cocaine Use and Distribution

History of Cocaine Use and Distribution

Cocaine is an alkaloid (nitrogen-based chemical) derived from the Coca leaf. The coca leaf was chewed on as a stimulant and appetite suppressant by native populations in South and Central America for many years preceding the arrival of European settlers. When the Spanish arrived, they banned its usage among enslaved natives as well as their own populations. However, they found the native population so addicted that the slaves could hardly work the fields without a regular high. Upon this realization, the coca plant was raised by the Catholic Church. The practice of chewing solely on the leaf to release the cocaine still continues today in that region’s more isolated areas. However, in urban areas all over the globe, the leaves have been purified into cocaine.

The process of this isolation was first developed and popularized in Germany in the 1850’s. The resultant drug was spread almost everywhere – sometimes added to other consumable goods like wine and cigarettes (Coca-Cola gets its name from cocaine being the primary stimulant when the drink first started out; Coca-Cola replaced cocaine with caffeine in 1904). Doctors, desperate for a solution to morphine addiction, prescribed it often; many of their patients unfortunately combined the addictions. As time went on and usage spread, those addictive properties became seen a moral crisis by reformers who were getting more aware of the condition of their societies around the globe.

With the turn of the 20th century, the world saw cocaine criminalization and enforcement of preexisting criminalization by modernized governments around the world. This has continued until present day, but conditions have been far from consistent.

Large quantities of illicit cocaine were first brought to Ontario in the 1970’s by plane, cocaine cartel extensions out of Detroit, and, surprisingly, motorcycle gangs. By the 1980’s the cocaine trade had topped organized crime in Canada. The South American government-pushed exportation drive during the 80’s established cocaine cartel extensions in major Canadian cities. Since then, cocaine has been established as a ‘club drug’ among the ‘party crowd;’ because of this, it has had sustained percentages of use, but spiked in the late 1990’s as cocaine usage equalized between inner cities and smaller towns.

Recently, however, annual rates have stabilized throughout the region: in 2003, 7% of Ontario adults said they had used cocaine at least once in their lifetime while 2% had used it within the last year. These rates are increased among the young: in 2005, the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health reported that more than 4% of students in grades 7 to 12 had use cocaine at least once in the past year.

The drugs are reaching these populations in much more complex ways than they ever have before: cartels are bringing cocaine to Canada from the US, Europe, and China. They depend on the use of their own equipment as well as syndicate members among other professions such as trucking and airlines. Distribution among motorcycle gangs still persists as one of the largest methods of transporting smaller shipments. One of the largest Ontario busts in history came from the gang ‘Hells Angels’ in 2006.

Types of Cocaine Treatment in Ontario

Types of Cocaine Treatment in Ontario

Cocaine addiction is a complex illness. Treatments for addiction are as complex and are frequently the subject of myths. These myths are largely unfounded and are spread by dealers in order to hold onto customers. This page goes over the commonly used treatments, for more information; contact your local drug addict treatment facility.

Presently, there are no purely medical treatments for cocaine addiction. This does not mean there is no hope, there is a lot of research into immunotherapy to isolate the drug before it reaches the brain. This took the form of a cocaine vaccine in the United Kingdom. It was only tested on 18 people, granted, but 14 of them were drug free after 6 months. Vaccination does raise ethical concerns about who would get it and by what criteria. Seriously addressing said concerns is at least a ways into the future. For now, behavioral treatments are the primary method. This therapy comes in a number of different forms:

Outpatient behavioral treatment includes a wide range of programs which require patients to visit the clinic regularly. Most programs involve a form of counseling, sometimes with a group of others suffering from the same level of addiction. There are four basic classifications for outpatient treatments:

Cognitive-behavioral therapy seeks to help patients actively identify, avoid, and cope with those situations in which they are most likely to abuse cocaine.

Multidimensional family therapy was developed for teens and others who still live with their family who have drug problems. This is designed to improve family structure enough so it can help the addicted individual to beat their problem.

Motivational interviewing is usually used when addicted individuals voluntarily contact clinics and already recognize that they have a problem. This treatment involves employing an individual’s willingness to overcome their addiction.

Motivational incentives (contingency management) use a process of rewards to help condition individuals away from relapse.

Residential treatment programs are much more successful and include abusers living in ‘therapeutic communities.’ They typically keep individuals in-house for 6 to 12 months, surrounding them with others attempting to sort out their problems. Sometimes rehabilitation centers offer gender and age specific communities to make individuals more comfortable and help them examine the problems surrounding their addictions and fix the key causes in lives. These houses are extremely effective at preventing relapse and access to those drugs which put clients in the situation which brought them to their position.

Treatments in the criminal justice system are centered on helping those imprisoned to not return to criminal behavior upon release. These treatments are usually less successful given their focus on non-recidivism in a more violent environment.

Combination treatments use both residential and outpatient procedures. For example, one rehabilitation center keeps individuals for detox and has them return periodically for checkups, positive reinforcement, and some more detox (if necessary) to clear out the residual toxins in the patient’s fat and bone marrow. In all, it seems that these treatments are the most effective, but also the most expensive.

There are different cocaine treatment programs in Ontario that can suit any deggrees of addiction.

General information on Cocaine Addiction

General information on Cocaine Addiction

Cocaine has proven extremely addictive in every type of laboratory animal, much more so than opiates (like heroine). For example, an addicted monkey pressed a button 12,800 times before it got a single dose of cocaine. In every single case, if the animal survives, it will return to the task of obtaining more cocaine.

Addiction Symptoms

The human response is very much alike the animal. The cocaine-dependent human seeks it over all other activities. The pursuit of cocaine begins to rule their lives; they press their economic ‘bar’ thousands and thousands of times in order to get a hit.

There have been stories of addicts selling their children into sex slavery for a relatively small amount of cocaine. Hooked, white collar professionals will go on binges often totaling $20,000 to $50,000. People lose jobs, family relationships, and their lives to cocaine addiction.

Scientists suspect that addiction is caused by the DAT-blocking effects of the drug. DAT is the abbreviation for ‘dopamine active transporter.’ The DAT is a membrane crossing protein that moves the ‘feel good’ hormone dopamine back into a nerve ending, out from the space between neurons where it makes the user feel good. By blocking this, cocaine causes dopamine to pool between neurons and prolong the ‘feel good’ effect. The effect itself is the biological equivalent of being rewarded for accomplishing a task such as finishing a ‘quest’ on a video game or winning an election except much, much more potent. Cocaine addiction is not only fueled by this ‘cocaine reward’ but also a series of cocaine-induced charges among neurons.

This charge is the disappearance and reappearance of certain receptors on the surface of neurons. These receptors control the flow of dopamine itself and, thus, an individual’s ability to feel good. Extended addiction results in a ‘cocaine dysphoria,’ a depression devoid of energy other than to get cocaine. Under the dysphoria, the addict/former addict can be pushed to suicide while not on cocaine and absolute mania while high. Eventually the dysphoria begins to dominate an addict’s life.

A lethargic and depressed form of existence falls on those who have developed a tolerance for cocaine’s high. They will often say that, when they try to get high, they ‘come up short’ or cannot reach the climaxed euphoria they felt before. This is also the time they will often recognize their addiction and seek cocaine treatment in Canada (either for depression or the addiction itself). The other common route addicts that are ‘over the hill’ follow is a move to a more efficient mode of induction.

If they were snorting, they’d move to smoking. If smoking, they move to injection. If injecting, they administer more injections until they die in the pursuit. In every case, they will move to more pure forms of cocaine to produce said euphoria. As the addicted process goes on, more and more cocaine users get treatment (both through intervention as well as voluntarily). As cocaine usage expands, our responsibility to assist in acknowledging addicts increases both in moral imperative and feasible possibility.{loadposition phone}

Three Types of Cocaine

Three Types of Cocaine

Today, cocaine is overwhelmingly found in powdered form. From that, it can be made into ‘crack’ (a crystallized form for smoking that looks like dried glycerin soap) or dissolved in a liquid (for injecting). Dealers will also lace it with other chemicals that have a similar appearance.

Lacing or ‘cutting in’ other chemicals is a dealer’s attempt to expand the amount of product they have for sale. This happens at every stage of the selling process. The European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction reports that the higher the demand for the product in an area, the less pure user-available drugs are.

Usually, in higher-use areas, the drugs must pass through more links in a chain. They are, for example, laced at the manufacture location (rural Columbian lab), shipping location (boat in Columbia), shipping time (journey to Newfoundland), for the sale to dealer (Newfoundland to a dealer in Toronto), and by the dealer for sale to user. That means that cocaine available on the street has been laced at least 5 times. Assuming that the cocaine is 99% pure to begin with, each step is cutting in other substances to make up about 18% of the product they sell’s weight. This scenario is consistent with the European Monitoring Centre’s finding that Western cocaine purity average is 26%: about one fourth cocaine.

The substances laced in are sometimes inert and will not have too much of an effect on the user. These include powdered sugars and flour. Other times, the drugs are potentially harmful to the user: dried household cleaners, fluoride, lime dust, and dried poultry/bird feces (especially where available). Finally, dealers, especially those in the ‘club scene,’ will cut in other things to enhance the expected feeling of cocaine.

This move can be the most deadly. They will often lace in chemicals made from other plants purchased legally. Many of these ‘stack’ with cocaine and vastly increase the chance of overdose. Also, users can be very allergic to these compounds and have deadly reactions for which there is little a hospital can do. A hospital can do equally little for if cocaine is injected.

Injected cocaine is a mixture of an acidic substance (vinegar, lemon juice, etc) and the powdered cocaine base. By mixing, the acid isolates the cocaine molecules (‘brown down’) into a very ‘hard’ form. As one can imagine, injecting vinegar and lemon juice is extremely painful and very harmful to the body’s systems. Compound these dangerous effects with the high absorption rate and injectors always run the risk of death if they push the plunger a millimeter too far. The chemical opposite of injected cocaine, crack cocaine is made with a substance of base (pH) substance.

Crack cocaine must be ‘cooked’ out of a basic substance (most commonly baking soda) and powdered cocaine. It is often laced at this stage as well in order to increase volume or dull effects so the user can function semi-normally after use. The creation process can be very dangerous given the tendency of cocaine to explode when exposed to such heat.

There are some really good Cocaine Treatment in Ontario where you can detox and get the proper treatment for your addiction.{loadposition phone}

Cocaine Side Effects

Cocaine Side Effects

Given the board spectrum of laced-in chemicals, the side effects of cocaine can be diverse and unexpected for street users. The ‘goal’ feeling is a euphoria (the ‘high’) which is experienced for a short duration while the ‘crash’ or withdrawal is a feeling of depression and utter sadness.

The scientifically verified side effects of pure cocaine are as follows:

Schizophrenia – disintegration of the process of thinking and collapse of emotional responsiveness. Manifested as auditory hallucinations (hearing things), paranoid or very strange delusions, disorganized speech, and social/occupational dysfunction.

Angry, hostile and anxious feelings – The precursor to schizophrenic emotional collapse

Violent behavior – typically found in the addicted, this tends to push others away in favor of cocaine use

Confusion – Users develop an inability to keep track of where they are or were going. Family can tend to hear lots of comments similar to “what did I come down here for?”

Increased physical activity – Recreational users tend to develop more ‘get up and go’ at strange times of the day while requiring less and less sleep.

Loss of appetite and severe weight loss – the early purpose for using coca leaves, users will sometimes go without eating for stretches of times, particularly if they have recently been on a ‘binge’ for 3 or 4 days straight.

Inability to sleep – insomnia results from the increased burning of energy; the effect is similar to a heavy dose of caffeine 3 hours before bed.

Increased heart and pulse rate – Hyper-stimulation of muscles means an increased heart rate

Permanent damage to blood vessels in the brain – Increased heart rate and blood pressure can cause the inner tissues of the brain’s blood vessels to “pop” out of the outer tissues (aneurysm) which will ultimately result in a brain hemorrhage (bleeding/stroke)

Convulsions and body tremors – A user’s muscles will contract in groups given that cocaine tends to block Muscle Action Potential and causes it to ‘burst’ among different nerve groups, leading to the contractions.

Chest pain and raised blood pressure – Arterial muscles constrict the side of arteries, causing increased blood pressure. To get through these smaller openings, the heart must work hard, putting more strain on it, resulting in the chest pains.

Irregular heartbeat – the heart’s increased workload will often result in it ‘skipping beats’ (palpitations)

AIDS or Hepatitis resulting from shared needles – shared needles comes with a very high risk of contracting blood-borne diseases like HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis.

Dependence and addiction – can be caused by even the first use. “Needing” cocaine in periodic intervals is also a form of addiction. The human body reacts very negatively when it needs its fix of cocaine, and this causes the general appearance that addicts are known for.

A runny nose and/or nose bleeds – destruction of nasal tissue results from snorting. Bleeding is the damage, runniness is the body’s attempt to repair said damage.

Deviated septum (collapse of the "divider" between the nostrils) – cocaine and the chemicals it is laced with will literally dissolve the cartilage between the nostrils. This effect is incredibly common, and has been known to form the unappealing appearance of a ‘bent’ nose.

Percocet in the Clinics and on the Streets

Percocet in the Clinics and on the Streets

Percocet has been a huge hit in the pharmaceutical industry, allowing many people to rid themselves of pain for a few days after a medical condition or injury. However, due to its addictive nature from the euphoria it synthesizes in the bodies of those who take it, Percocet has become in high demand on the streets of cities all over the world to help feed the addictions of afflicted persons. The Drug Enforcement Administration requires that Percocet prescriptions be issued for specific quantities, and they ban the issuing of refills on these prescriptions to decrease the flow of medication from the hands of those who need it, into the hands of drug dealers and addicts in the public sector. Pharmaceutical companies are also required to submit reports on the production of Percocet so the government is better able to track the use and distribution of this drug. This simple step allows easier identification of problems within the supply line and to help catch addicts more easily.

Why Percocet is In High Demand

Due to the pain killing components, acetaminophen and oxycodone, that comprise Percocet, addictions are very common after a legitimate prescription is issued. While not all takers of Percocet encounter an addiction to the drug, it is more common than not, and junkies work very hard to ensure that they get their fix from dealers on the streets if they cannot get a legalized quantity.

As is the case with economic analysis, the higher the demand for a specific item is, the greater consumers are willing to pay for it. Since the government keeps close watch over Percocet production and distribution, it is incredibly expensive and difficult to procure. Many addicts are known to consume between twenty and forty Percocet pills on a daily basis, and the high quantity of consumption to calm down the craving. Increased consumption decreases supply among all channels of illegal trafficking, and thus demand is increased. There are some good detox and percocet treatment in Ontario where you can get the proper help.

Percocet Addiction Symptoms

With the nature of Percocet as a narcotic and pain killer, most patients suffering from an addiction do not even realize that they are addicted because this powerful medication impairs your judgment in the same manner that alcohol does. Various rehabilitation centers report that patients with an addiction to Percocet incur feelings of nausea, cramps, frequent perspiration, and increased irritability, within 2 to 4 hours of missing a dose. Along with the minor side effects listed above that occur when an addiction to Percocet goes without treatment, longer periods of time without taking any of the medication have been known to cause serious seizures and convulsions as the body is unable to quench its dangerous thirst.

The majority of Percocet addictions start off innocently, as patients take the pain killer as it is intended: to kill pain, but the increased length of consumption time increases the body’s tolerance, so more is taken to adjust to the tolerance, and then the body develops a dependency on the medication.{loadposition phone}

Percocet: What it is

Percocet: What it is

Percocet is one of the highest rated pain killers on the market in the world today, due to its excellent track record of being able to assist citizens to cope with severe pain. However, along with the great power of Percocet, comes the dangerous and addictive nature, to which many Americans fall victim every single day. As a prescription drug, Percocet is readily available to most United States residents with health and prescription insurance coverage, making it more affordable to the addicted.

Symptoms Common of the Addiction

With the prolonged consumption of Percocet, the human body eventually develops a tolerance that is combatted by simply taking more. The average Percocet addict is known to down over twenty pills every day in order to feed the desire their body has for this powerful narcotic. As dangerously high as this number is, and how dangerous it can be on the human body to take such large quantities, the only time that an addict really truly notices the volume that they are ingesting, is when they have side effects after missing a dose.

The symptoms that occur when an addict misses a dose generally occur within four hours, and these symptoms include vomiting, nausea, constipation, cramps, and increased sweat gland activity. Apart from the symptoms of missing a dose, simply halting the entire intake of Percocet has even more dangerous repercussions, including convulsing and seizures induced by the body’s nervous system

Treatment and Rehabilitation

Since the dangers of the addiction are great, so must be the procedures used by rehab centers to ensure safe and effective addictions therapy in the United States.

Perhaps the most common and effective method of Percocet addictions treatment in America is the Waismann Method. While very complex on paper and in structure, the Waismann Method boasts a success rate that puts the majority of patients back into their normal lives, addiction free and healthy, within several days of pretreatment procedures. The pretreatment portion of this program includes a brain chemical analysis to ensure that each patient receives a level of care tailored to his or her needs. The most attractive part about this method in contrast to other Percocet rehab centers is that the Waismann Method does not use opiate type drugs in order to gradually get patients out of their chains of addiction. They use anesthesia and a proprietary intervention technique to ensure that the patients are able to leave addiction and opiate free.

Other rehabilitation centers employ the use of methadone, a synthetic opiate compound that allows the human body to slowly decrease its need for Percocet, while eliminating the side effects and symptoms that are often seen with addicts who are attempting to stop taking it.

While Percocet is a great substance that allows many American citizens the freedom to deal with severe pain, it also poses a great risk to their personal safety if intake is not moderated. Through state of the art percocet treatment programs and simple methods like recognizing a potential issue before it becomes a large problem, Percocet is able to be kept a great medication and less of a dangerous drug.

What Percocet is and What it Does

What Percocet is and What it Does

Percocet is a hybrid medication that contains acetaminophen and oxycodone to help patients recover from various medical procedures and pain in general. Apart from its very helpful nature in assisting people to live more comfortably in spite in short term pain, it has the reputation for being very addictive, and as is the case with most narcotics, it is common for people to develop a higher tolerance, the more it is ingested. Apart from the simple addiction because your body subconsciously craves it, Percocet helps block your nerve receptors from feeling the pain that they otherwise would, and it also creates a synthetic euphoria in your nervous system.

How to Identify a Percocet Addiction

Drug rehabilitation centers report that it is not uncommon for patients addicted to Percocet to take between 20-40 pills each day in order to sustain the euphoric state that this medication is known for. The majority of addicts do not even realize that they are popping this many pills, as they are more concerned about the feeling Percocet gives them, and thus usually the addiction is not recognized as a threat to their health until it is too late. It is incredibly important to the health and safety of the afflicted to ensure that they are being monitored closely when taking Percocet to prevent a dangerous dependency.

The main symptoms of Percocet addictions include impaired focus, dizziness, increased and frequent perspiration, dry mouth, constipation, nausea, constant drowsiness and changes in moods that may affect activities in the addict’s life, relationship issues, and decreased productivity in the workplace. Unfortunately, these effects are not usually obvious to the sufferers of the addiction, and therefore it is even more important to family and friends to identify the addiction before it becomes severe.

Percocet addictions create a physical and emotional dependency in humans that can cause serious health conditions if the intake of this medication is abruptly cut off. Seizures and convulsions are common when a person with an addiction suddenly stops taking Percocet. It is very important to seek professional help when a Percocet addiction is identified, as to ensure a safe and effective recovery.

Treatment and Addiction Prevention

After a Percocet addiction has been identified, the road to recovery has to be approached with caution to ensure that addicts are able to get back on their feet without physical repercussions.

A lot of methods such as methadone are not the best methods as it can create a bigger dependencies than the percocet by itselves.

Apart from simply lessening the body’s dependency on Percocet, it is also highly recommended that patients seek addictions therapy to ensure that they do not fall back into a rut, and get stuck with the same addiction again.

Addictions hurt more than the people directly dealing with them; they hurt the families, friends, loved ones, and coworkers of the afflicted. The best way to rid an addict of problems before they become severe is to prevent the snowball effect and seek help immediately for a percocet treatment in Ontario.
