Alcoholism and Mood Swings

Anyone can have mood swings. We have all experienced this at some point or another. However, there are many who witness mood swings when they are under the influence. There are many who can experience many things when they drink because not everyone deals with alcohol the same way. For some, it can get so bad that they actually have issues with major mental disorders such as bipolar disorder or things of that nature which can cause some pretty bad mood swings to a person.

Mental Things that Correlate to Mood Swings

When you look at what triggers mood swings and what makes the body react the way it does, you need to look at serotonin and dopamine. These are the things that are responsible for mood swings and other things with the brain. The serotonin levels actually altar your mood swings. They say this is due to part of the fact this is responsible for the reward process of the brain. When there are changes to the serotonin, you will find that there are a number of things that it can cause. For some, when they drink alcohol, it might decrease the level of serotonin. For some, it does the opposite effect. Then, there is dopamine. When you drink, you increase the release of dopamine. This effects emotion as well. However, what you find is that it is also responsible for everything in the nervous system which includes movement and coordination. There is still much more to learn about this and how it relates to those who drink. In order for the brain and body to function properly, there has to be an equal amount of both of those.

Types of Mood Changes

For every person who drinks, their mood changes might differ. Some might have cheery outbursts where they are happy all the time. Some might be a little bit different. For some, they might be depressed. There might be some that when they drink, they get downright angry and lash out at people all the time. It all depends on the individual and their brain process.

Avoiding Mood Swings

There are many who will say that you can’t get away from these mood swings. Those who suffer from alcoholism say this is the hardest part. However, you will find that you can indeed avoid them. How can one who drinks do this? Learn what your moods are. You might get tired when you drink. You might get angry. When you know that you are like this, you can limit yourself. Be aware of those that people might not like and have people around you when you drink. If you are prone to anger and start fights, avoid places like bars and such. Monitor how much you drink as well. Some limit how much they can drink in any given time frame. You can also attend a treatment for alcohol abuse in Ontario that would get these mood swings vanish forever.

Tolerance While Drinking

There are many out there that the more they drink, the more tolerant to alcohol they will become. This can have a negative effect on you when you stop to think about it. It can be something that can hurt a person all the more. When you drink more, you will be able to handle more alcohol and so forth. Therefore the mood swings will either change or in most cases get worse or you will find that they will go away. Again, it all depends on the person at hand.
